Mobile internet has become a popular source of internet across UK. Web access using a mobile network is accessible through any device that can access signals from a mobile base station. There are many varieties of USB modems, routers, smart phones and I-phones that are cable of accessing the 3G broadband services.
Mobile networks are widely spread across the country. Broadband statistics say that almost 95% of the country is covered with the 2G and 3G networks. But the actual fact differs widely from the report. Most of the rural areas are unable to have access to the 3G broadband service. Also many urban areas do not receive a proper coverage or does not get the speed that is actually offered.
Mobile Internet is expected to be one of the major contributors in providing 100% connectivity in UK. But there are many factors that haven’t allowed the service to serve the purpose.
1. Many of the mobile base stations are still not upgraded to 3G standards; they still work using 2G standards.
2. Mobile signals are vulnerable to thick walls, large buildings, glass doors, trees, climatic changes etc.
3. Data transmission is mostly affected due to its size in a mobile network than the voice transmission.
4. Availability of a network does not mean that it will meet the offered speed, because it varies according to the power of the base station.
5. The device or mobile type also plays an important role in accessing a 3G service.
Upgradation of all the mobile base stations to the 3G standards will be one of the first steps that have to be done to get proper coverage. The maximum speed that can be offered using a 3G network is 14.4Mbs, but the base stations have not yet been boosted to such speeds. Some of them are capable of transmitting at 7.2Mbps, while others transmit at 3.6Mbps. Upgradation of these networks to transmit at 14.4Mbps so the average speed in UK will be 7.2Mbps. More base stations should be installed in rural and remote areas, since coverage is a major issue in all these places. Internet providers can install integrated base stations in areas of low inhabitants so as to reduce on more investment as well as provide access for users of these areas.
Economic development of the country can increase by raising the economy of the users in the rural areas. Mobile internet is said to contribute enormously for the growth of the country, but the situation doesn’t seems to meet even the requirement of today.
